How to Double Dig a Garden!
Double digging your garden has many benefits. While it may be hard work, it can vastly improve the structure of the soil of the garden, which will lead to better flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables.
Experts recommend starting small when you first attempt double digging. Your garden soil may be somewhat in a compacted state and need to be loosened up more than normal. It can help to have the aid of another person when you double dig your garden. The process may take more than a day, which will depend on the size of the garden in question.
Begin at one end of your garden, and dig out a trench across the width that is about as deep as your shovel. Fill up a wheelbarrow with the dirt you pull out, and move off to the side. At the very bottom of the trench you have dug, loosen up the dirt with your shovel, or use an instrument such as a pick axe or pitchfork. After this step, dig a second trench alongside the first one, and put the soil that you are pulling up into your first trench. Then loosen up the soil in your second trench in the same manner that you did the first one. Repeat these steps until you have finished your whole garden. You will use the dirt from the first trench that you dug to fill up your last one.
One important tip to double digging is to not ever do it if the soil is very wet, as this can damage the soil particles. You may also add compost to the top layer of your plot while you are double digging. It is also advised to not walk on the garden area as much as possible, as this will compact the soil, making it harder for you to produce your crop.
