Controlling Weeds Organically!
Controlling weeds without the use of chemicals can prove tricky, but is certainly far from impossible. There are tried and true ways that are effective in the fight against weeds.
Consider the following options when looking to wage a war against weed growth organically.
Hand Pulling
Hand pulling is a straight forward method that requires no preparation or special equipment, so you can get started whenever you are ready. This is a technique that gets easier and more efficient with practice. Remember, it is important to be sure you pull deep enough to get the weed root when you pull, to slow or stunt re-growth.
Hoeing
Hoeing a garden at season’s end helps reduce weed growth at the start of the new season dramatically. Be sure to use a very sharp hoe to get a good cut, severing the stem from the root beneath the soil in one swift step.
Solarization
Solarization is another good technique to employ. In order to solarize, you must commit to leaving your garden unplanted and rather unsightly for at least 6 weeks during the summer. In late spring, hoe or till our all the weeds from the garden bed that you can see. Moisten the soil then lay down clear plastic over the soil, taking care to secure the edges to keep the plastic in place. The plastic needs to stay in place for 6 weeks during which time the heat of the sun will keep any remaining weeds buried deep beneath the soil.
Barriers
Cardboard or newspaper barriers laid upon the soil and then mulched over can sometimes last multiple seasons only allowing in a handful of weeds per square yard. This is an inexpensive and earth-friendly way to recycle while maintaining a chemical free garden.
Chicken Feed
Try using corn gluten meal which is also known as chicken feed to scatter over the soil. This method only works to prevent weeds before they have sprouted. This method works best in established lawns or perennial gardens.
One of these methods is sure to work in your garden to help you keep weeds in check, leaving more space for your plants to thrive.
