Container gardening is quite popular nowadays especially in high rise condos and apartments. As long as you have a window facing the south or the west direction, you can already grow tomatoes. You must keep in mind that tomatoes become larger when they mature so you will need large containers (at least 12 to 14 inches in diameter. If you pick a smaller container, the tomato plant will not last long. For great tomatoes, don’t hesitate in purchasing large pots.

After you’ve purchased the pots, you should now fill it with soil. Don’t use the garden soil and instead, buy soil mix to avoid soil compaction. The latter should be avoided as it may lead to the death of the tomato plant or develop a stunted growth. Don’t forget to buy a soil tester so that you can check the soils pH level. You should put the soil mix together with a first-rate fertilizer. Since the plant requires constant watering, you should put lots of soil. Six shovels of soil may already be enough.

You should buy plenty of fertilizers. Tomatoes require a weekly supplement of fertilizers. This is to ensure the growth of the tomato plant. You can choose between synthetic or organic fertilizers. Some fertilizers are available in liquid form and this is very good for tomato plants as they are absorbed by the soil quickly.

95% of tomatoes consist of water. There is a need to water the tomato plants frequently. If you live in a place with hot climate, you need to water the plant twice each day.

Get stakes for the tomato plant. The branches easily break but with the stakes, you can secure them in place. You should give attention to disease and pest control. Just like the fertilizers, the pest control products can be synthetic and organic. The decision is yours, whether you will use conventional gardening or organic gardening.

Get the containers ready and find a suitable window inside your home so that you can start planting tomato plants. You don’t yard space just to grow tomatoes; now you can see them growing healthily by the window.

Water is another consideration for tomato gardening. You should not forget to water the tomatoes every day. This is essential for the growth of the plants. When you’re near the harvest season, water should be decreased so that the tomatoes will become sweeter. Don’t water the tomato plants too much when harvest season is near because it can cause plant stress; when tomato plants are stressed, the tomatoes may drop even before harvest time.

Once you get the plants from the nursery, you need to bury them deep into the ground. When tomato plants are deep-rooted, it can absorb more nutrients. Planting tomato plants deeper as compared to other plants is not a problem because roots usually grow from their stems. The tomatoes won’t die off just because you buried them deeply.

Tomato gardening is very rewarding because it’s really easy. As long as you follow the helpful tips above, you will surely harvest healthy, sweet, and red tomatoes. Before you try gardening, you should have adequate knowledge about it. That way, you can ensure better plant growth.
