Watering Orchids: How much water does my orchid need?

Watering your orchid is all about balance and knowing what your orchid plant needs.  Many orchids like a moister environment to grow such as the Miltonia Orchid.  The Miltonia loves the humidity of their native habitat.  The rain forests maintain a moist, humid environment that is ideal for the Miltonia, however like most orchids; they do not like the wet.  The Miltonia needs frequent watering, but also good air circulation to make sure that moisture does not accumulate.  Accumulated water is a killer causing your roots to suffocate, rot and die.  Of course, there are many orchids that do not require as much moisture such as the Cypripedium which will remain happy when supplied with a damp pot (not wet) throughout the year.  The point here is that you need to understand what kind of orchid you have and its ideal growing environment.  Once you understand this you can use techniques to assess how much water the plant is being exposed to and adjust accordingly.

The olive tree, or as it is known Olea europaea and comes from the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean, Syria, Asia Minor and northern Iran. The cultivation of the olive tree is something people have been practicing for many years.While the fruit of the tree is primarily used for the making of olive oil, the wood has been utilized for the making of furniture and the leaves for medicinal use. It is believed that the first olive trees were grown in Syria. In Ancient Greece, the tree was seen as holy and people were punished if caught cutting it down. Because of the tree’s fruit, medicinal use and history, many myths and lore have been written about it. In Homer’s Odyssey, the tree is talked about.
