You have taken the first step and decided that you want to grow your own organic vegetable garden. But, where do you start? You begin from the ground up, of course.
The most important part of growing a successful fruit and vegetable garden is making sure you have the absolute best soil possible. There are many ingredients you can add to your soil to enrich it with nutrients, but compost is probably your best bet. Compost creates the best nutrient rich soil for growing vegetables. Adding organic matter such as compost to your soil does wonderful things to your garden plants. The organic matter helps to feed and protect your fruits and vegetables. Compost also helps prevent erosion of the soil and helps the moisture level in your garden while mulching the soil.
It is important to remember not to plant your garden too close to trees and shrubs as their root systems will steal the nutrients and water from the soil you worked so hard to create.
Once you have your compost thoroughly mixed with your soil, you need to prepare your soil for the planting process. Preparing your soil is one of the most important steps you will need to take to ensure a successful garden. You will need to prepare the soil by adding a layer of compost or organic fertilizer on top of your soil. Once your layer of compost or fertilizer has been added, tilling or spading the layer into the existing soil is the next step. Next you will need to create rows or mounds into the soil, depending on the type of plants you will be planting.
Now that you have added your compost and properly prepared your soil, you can begin planting an organic fruit and vegetable garden that is sure to flourish and produce a bountiful harvest.
